Even with the proper application of preventive antiscalants and biocides, a normal operating membrane separation system can become fouled by inorganic impurities, biological matters, organic contaminants, suspended solids and metal oxides. The results are loss in permeate flow, increase in salt passage, increase in differential pressure and deterioration of the normal overall operating condition of the system.
